The source of inspiration for the Hoffmann Arc ear studs was a door element of the world-famous „Sanatorium Purkersdorf“, which was built in 1904-1905 by Josef Hoffmann for the client, Victor Zuckerkandl, who acquired the site as a „water sanatorium including spa park“. Hoffmann used reinforced concrete, the most modern building material at the time, especially in terms of construction. Even today, the sanatorium is considered an outstanding example of architecture in the style of the Viennese Secession. Hoffmann realised a total work of art on this site. Both the park and the entire interior design were created by the Wiener Werkstätte.
The sanatorium became the social and artistic meeting place of the Viennese avant-garde.
In the course of its 100-year history, it has had countless owners and was subjected to looting and alterations until it was renovated on the outside in 1995 and on the inside in 2003 and largely restored to its original condition. The sanatorium is now used as a senior care residence.

Als Inspirationsquelle für die Ohrstecker Hoffmann Arc diente ein Türelement des weltberühmten „Sanatorium Purkersdorf“ welches 1904-1905 von Josef Hoffmann für den Bauherrn, Victor Zuckerkandl, der das Gelände als „Wasserheilanstalt samt Kurpark“ erwarb, erbaut wurde. Für den Bau verwendete Hoffmann Stahlbeton, den damals vor allem in konstruktiver Hinsicht modernsten Baustoff. Noch heute gilt das Sanatorium als herausragendes Beispiel für Architektur im Stile der Wiener Secession. Hoffmann hat auf diesem Areal ein Gesamtkunstwerk verwirklicht. Sowohl die Parkanlagen als auch die gesamte Innenausstattung stammt von der Wiener Werkstätte.
Das Sanatorium wurde zum gesellschaftlichen und künstlerischen Treffpunkt der Wiener Avantgarde.
Im Lauf seiner 100-jährigen Geschichte gab es unzählige Eigentümer und war Plünderungen und Umbauten ausgesetzt bis es 1995 außen und 2003 auch innen renoviert und der Originalzustand weitgehend wieder hergestellt wurde. Das Sanatorium wird nun als Seniorenpflegeresidenz verwendet.
